 5.0 out of 5 stars A stellar rollable connected chessboard. Loving the SquareOff Pro for OTB chess at home. Great rollable board! I have the SquareOff Kingdom set and this is another great option. It's much more portable and easy to transport between locations (no locking the mechanism and packaging up the board, just roll up the board and go). The operation through the app is smooth and fast, I was impressed with how quickly the moves are transmitted to the board. This will allow for playing faster time controls vs opponents through the app. The pieces are big and feel nicely weighted. The annoying "press beeps" are a thing of the past, replaced with light-up LEDs on each square for piece movement. I like the low-profile on-off button and the USB-C charge port. Connecting to the SquareOff app and playing with the AI was a snap, the app immediately detected the board and I was playing in a few moments. Moving pieces is easy, when capturing a piece the order matters. You have to first move your piece that intends to capture the opponent piece, then remove the captured opponent piece, then place your piece on the now-vacated square of the captured piece. Once I got this worked out, the gameplay was smooth and easy. Unfortunately owning this board did not instantly make me a better chess player, but it's still great fun. Very happy with this board. Unbox, set up the pieces, download the app, and connect the board in the app settings ... then you are ready to play. Tournament sized set. Excellent price for what you get. Cons: Android app will not allow selection of custom time controls on chess.com. I bought this item specifically to play training games of 90/30 on chess.com as part of the GM Jesse Kraai, IM David Pruess and IM Kostya Kavutskiy's Chess Dojo training program. This was a show stopper for me, so Im processing the item for a return and refund. Time controls are selectable but hard-wired and limited. Available selections are 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 15 minutes with a 10 second increment, and 45 minutes with a 45 second increment. UPDATE: Square Off customer service indicated that the problem with the time control is that chess.com has not included it in their public API. So, I added a star back to my initial rating. This is a good unit if you know its limitations. I also was not impressed with the design, weight and color of the pieces. The squares are 2 inches in size which is the smallest allowable for official "tournament" sets. The pieces look a bit over-sized for the 2 inch squares. Would be better with 2.25 inch squares. 2.25 inch squares are most common in tournament sets. A "perfect" Square Off Pro set would have 2.25 inch squares with pieces having a base diameter that does not swallow the squares they occupy and completely selectable time controls for online play. An imitation wood color would also be nice -- at least something not so blindingly white. Piece colors should not match the color of the squares (there should be *some* contrast. Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2022 I was waiting for a tournament size board, and didn't want the pieces to move be themselves, I feel it hurts when playing 10 min games. This board is wonderful, tournament feel. I normally play 15/10 games on chess.com. The interface is good, but still need a few improvements, for example, I would like to pick the color pieces when playing on chess.com. The computer engine is strong for all levels. Overall a great addition. I would strongly recommend for any chess fan. Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2022 This chess set is awesome and so fun to play with. I haven't used it online yet because its so fun to play against the different AI levels. My son and I have played many games and it keeps track of the time and the moves automatically. Sometimes it takes 5 seconds for the LEDs to light up for a move but not that often. Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2022 When unfolded, the board did not appear to lie completely flat; instead there were minor ripples. About 30% of the time, the j1 cell with the bishop displayed two lights that would not readily turn off so no play could occur. Turning the board off then on did not seem to correct the issue. Eventually, on its own, the lights would turn off so play could start. I thought the size of the board and pieces were great and provided heft when moving. I returned the set. I may buy the one with the wooden board. Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2022 It’s a great board and will hopefully force DGT to up their game. But unless you’re planning to travel with it the fact that it rolls up is actually the weakest part of the board. It’s really annoying to have the pieces askew because the board is all rippled. It doesn’t affect its function though. It’s way better than the gimmicks of the one that noisily moves the pieces for you. A solid board version of this would be spectacular. The Chessnut Air does a better job, both with its app and being solid. But these pieces are a nicer size. I’m hoping both companies are in a race to come up with the best solution. Also the app font is TINY on the phone. Use a tablet. Reviewed in Canada on August 29, 2022 This e-chess set ticked all my boxes: tournament sized, portable, connects to chess websites... perfect. Or so I hoped. Short story even shorter, the required app ruined the experience. It would lose track of the game and I was forced to resign and start again in roughly one game out of three. You'll be mid-game and notice the app will reject your valid move. It doesn't indicate why, no error shown on the screen. Even if you compare the board to it's version of the board and it matches, it refuses your moves, or just as bad wants you to move twice in a row. It won't show a current list of moves so you can't see what it is upset about. There is no 'Confirm the board' so you can reset to its last known good position and carry on. You are just stuck and must restart the game. Otherwise it is great. The board is big and the pieces a good size and feel nice. The app connects immediately and the AI (level changes based on how well you play) makes for a satisfying opponent. The games I could complete were very enjoyable and it really felt like I was playing a human opponent. Responses to the same opening were different so it is not playing the same opening everytime. Two things that irked me is the board would not go completely flat in some areas. Pieces would wobble like they were on a bubble in a couple spots. Not a deal breaker but annoying. I'd also encourage the developers to not light the entire path a piece moves, just which piece and where it is going. As it is depending on the angle your head is at you have to look around to ensure you have the right start and end. Sadly, after a couple days I had to return the product. Having the app (or perhaps it was the board) fail on me randomly was not acceptable. 3.0 out of 5 stars just a middle of the road review Reviewed in Canada on March 23, 2022 From what I read on the internet the first move from your opponent may not appear on the physical board so check your app to whether or not your opponent may have moved and your clock is ticking already. There are various concenrns on whether or not the led could be broken from rolling up the board so again if you have the option of leaving it unrolled, do so. Lastly some LEDs are faint and apparently this the way it is. I was looking forward to getting mine but unfortunately my board was lost in transit and I simply got a refund. 1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible! Reached out to seller who totally blew me off - referred me back to Amazon - okay - returned! What happens if a piece fails after warranty ? Throw it away at over $300?!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!
